Dear Families,
Your child has been preparing for a major milestone in his/her academic career- the PSSA. The PSSA is a standardized test that Pennsylvania students in grades 3-8 and 11 take annually. Your child has been working diligently in school to prepare academically and mentally for the upcoming PSSA. It is a big deal and requires mental and physical stamina. Parents are the most important teachers in a child's life, and parental support is absolutely necessary for a child to be successful on the PSSA. I feel that it is important to provide parents with information about how they can help me prepare our students to be successful with the exam. The
following terms are all important aspects to help develop a healthy mind and body for students and will be useful to you as your support your child as he/she prepares for the test. Any support that you can give your child will give him/her an advantage on testing days.
Sleep- Students need to get a good night sleep, especially the night before a test. Students who have a good night sleep can pay better attention and handle the demands of a test. Before a big exam students should get at least 8 hours of sleep, eat a healthily balanced breakfast, and be motivated to do their best.
Attendance-School attendance is extremely important, no only during the time when the test is being administered, but also in the weeks leading up to the test. We will be practicing every day to ensure your child has the best opportunity to be successful, it is recommended that he/she is not absent.
Exercise- Exercise is said to sharpen the mind and is a great stress reliever. Exercise also increases the flow of oxygen to the brain, which helps students keep alert.
Food- Students need to eat a balanced diet. Certain foods help them learn. Carbohydrates produce serotonin in the brain, which helps keep a person calm. Vitamin-C helps protect the brain nerve cells. Vitamins B-3 and B-6 aid in concentration.
*** Remind your child that the test is very important. Encourage him/her to do their best! Everyone's best is different, but doing one's best is always the ultimate goal.
*** Encourage your child to stay focused on the test, even if other students finish early. It is not a race or a competition.
